Heritage & Nature
Our landscape is an integral part of our cultural heritage. We have been shaped by our environment just as we have shaped it. Archeological evidence indicates Native American groups had several uses for the resources in the region including hunting, gathering, agriculture, clothing, tools, and more. Today, we continue to use the land in similar ways, occasionally on a larger scale such as with commercial agriculture, timbering, commercial and sport fishing, commercial boating, sand and gravel mining. Other traditions have carried over such as gardening, hunting, and fishing. We also have recreational uses for our landscape which ranges from recreational fishing and boating to tourism. We continue to have a strong relationship with the land and water of the lower eastern shore.
