Maryland Heritage Area Grants

Letters of Intent are now being accepted, and the deadline to submit is January 27. Final applications are due March 3 with announcements of awards in July 2025.
Non-Capital Projects
The Maryland Heritage Authority funds non-capital projects that support and create heritage tourism resources and experiences within the thirteen certified heritage areas. Our non-capital projects often fall into the broad categories of planning, interpretation, programming, digital resources and research. Awards can range from $5,000 to $50,000

Capital Projects:
MHAA funds capital projects that support and create heritage tourism infrastructure within the thirteen certified heritage areas. Broadly, types of capital projects funded include acquisition, development (construction), rehabilitation and restoration of real properties. MHAA also funds
pre-development planning for capital projects as part of the MHAA Capital Grants program. A capital project must have exceptionally significant heritage tourism impact and meet MHAA's target investment project criteria. Awards range from $5,000 to $100,000.

Other Grants & Funding Sources

Keep America Beautiful & Keep Maryland Beautiful Grants
Each year, Keep America Beautiful awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding for community beautification, greening and environmental initiatives. The Forever Maryland Foundation in partnership with the Maryland Environmental Trust, Maryland Department of Transportation, and Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development offer four Keep Maryland Beautiful grants to help volunteer-based, nonprofit groups, communities and land trusts in Maryland to support environmental education projects, litter removal, citizen stewardship and to protect natural resources in urban and rural areas.

Maryland Pathways Grants
The Pathways Grant Program provides support for projects at historical organizations throughout the state of Maryland. The goal is to build the long-term resiliency and efficacy of museums, historic sites, and other organizations that make up Maryland’s heritage community. Pathways is made possible by an annually recurring allocation from the state’s Preservation of Cultural Arts Fund. The Maryland Center for History and Culture is administering this grant program as an extension of their mission to educate people of all ages about the rich history and culture of Maryland and the nation.

Historic Preservation Grants
The Maryland Historical Trust is hosting webinars in November and January for prospective applicants for the Historic Preservation Capital Grant Program. This competitive funding program provides grants for construction projects on buildings or structures listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Attend a webinar to learn if your project is eligible, what is required for submitting an application, how to convey an easement, and more.

CyArk Heritage Amplified Grant
CyArk is accepting applications for their “Heritage Amplified Grants” which provide recipients with an opportunity to amplify place-based stories of cultural heritage through the development of a web-based 3D virtual experience. Grantees will receive CyArk services to design and build the experience with the final output hosted on CyArk’s Tapestry platform, which can be freely shared and embedded. The grant will support the facilitation and execution of all aspects of a CyArk project, including participation in a place-based story development process and CyArk’s high-resolution digital documentation of the selected site. Grant recipients will also receive a small cash grant to support their team during the project activities. Applications for the grant close at midnight PST on February 21st 2025. Learn More

Unity Cemetery Preservation Fund
The Unity Cemetery Preservation Fund provides support for the preservation of historic African American cemeteries. The Fund defines “historic cemeteries” as cemeteries with multiple graves dating from approximately 1800 to 1942. Funds can be used for projects that include any of the following: mapping, site assessment, and other data collection; conservation treatments for grave markers and other funerary features; landscape stabilization; public outreach. An annual award of up to $50,000 will be given to a group that has identified a cemetery in need of such attention and agrees to shepherd the project through the multi-year process. The application deadline is February 28, 2025. More about applying.
