Beach to Bay Heritage Area 2025

BBHA Wins a Preservation Award

Picture
On May 1st, 2025 at New Bethel Church in Berlin, the Beach to Bay Heritage Area was awarded a preservation award from the Maryland Historical Trust for Excellence in Public Programming and Exhibits for our African American Heritage Project!

Our African American Heritage Project featured several components including 3 murals painted by local artists, 14 interpretive signs installed at significant historical & cultural sites, 5 radio segments aired with the help of Delmarva Public Media, StoryWay articles, and more! These elements together helped highlight local activists, heroes, places of significance to the African American community, and key moments in our history that remained obscure even to those calling the Shore their home. With the help of our communities, we were able to not only help preserve, but bring attention to these people, places, and their shared histories!

Thank you to everyone involved including, Dr. Clara Small, Jill Jasuta, Michael Rosato, Brandon Bell & We Are Limitless Studios, Delmarva Public Media, Unscene Productions, and many more!

Reworking of the "Beach to Bay Indian Trail"

Picture
The Beach to Bay Heritage has been reworking the old "Beach to Bay Indian Trail" with the guidance of the Pocomoke Indian Nation to create an experience that truly honors the history indigenous communities of the area and how closely intertwined with colonial history it became. The reworked recreation trail will have a new name and interpretive material associated with it. The project was made possible by grants from the Rural Maryland Council and Maryland 250.

Heritage Bill Passes!

Picture
On the last day of the Maryland General Assembly, Monday, April 7, SB0980 Natural Resources - Maryland Heritage Areas Authority - Funding and Grants passed the Maryland Senate with 137 votes in favor from the House of Delegates. Beach to Bay Heritage Area, along with its partners in the Maryland Heritage Areas Coalition, proudly celebrated the passage of SB0980, allowing more funds to support Maryland’s heritage and economy.

The legislation, sponsored by Sens. Paul Corderman and Michael A. Jackson, increases the opportunity for funding (not FY26) for the Maryland Heritage Areas Program – from $6 million to $12 million annually and raises caps on grants to heritage organizations from $100,000 to $300,000 – allowing for higher levels of program and product development and more impactful capital projects. It also reduces the match requirement for nonprofits, further reducing barriers to equitable awards.

A big shout out to all of our partners who submitted letters and made phone calls to get this bill passed!

Somerset County Selected to Co-Host Smithsonian Exhibition

The Smithsonian heads to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with Maryland Humanities’ next Museum on Main Street tour on January 17, 2026! This is the second stop on Maryland’s tour of "Spark! Places of Inspiration," a traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition focused on innovation. This tour is possible through Maryland Humanities’ Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program, our collaboration with Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, which teams up with state humanities councils like Maryland Humanities to bring high-quality Smithsonian traveling exhibitions to museums, historical societies, and other small-town cultural venues across the country.

Beach to Bay Receives Rural Maryland Council Funding for Indian Trail

Picture
BBHA has recently been awarded funding from the Rural Maryland Council, Maryland Agricultural Education Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF) program for the redevelopment of the Beach to Bay Indian Trail. The Beach to Bay Indian Trail was designated a National Recreation Trail by the Department of the Interior in 1993. The trail is highlighted with stops at museums and parks throughout Worcester and Somerset counties. We are planning to re-image the trail, not just in name, but with expanded content and interpretation. While it was intended to recreate the native pathways and migration patterns from the beach to the bay by Native Americans, it lacked accuracy due to insufficient consultation with the area’s Indigenous People. We will be consulting with the Pocomoke Indian Nation to create new interpretive materials.

Rebranding!

We rebranded our heritage area, created a new website, re-started a monthly e-newsletter, gave away $15,000 in mini grant funding to popular heritage organizations, created our first of 10 virtual video tours of museums and historic sites, and worked with the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority to quantify the impact of our heritage area.

We have a new look and a new name!

Thanks to a generous grant from the Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF) through the Rural Maryland Council in the fall of FY20, we have undergone a Phase II process to redefine ourselves in today's world to better implement our mission to preserve, protect, and promote our lower shore region and the heritage assets here. Utilizing a professional consulting firm, Choptank Communications, we have undergone a yearlong process to provide us with a strategy moving forward that satisfies the needs and desires of our stakeholders for this heritage area. We are proud of our fresh new approach and bright, distinctive look. Formerly known as the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Area,  we are now the Beach to Bay Heritage Area, and branding as Beaches, Bays and Water Ways.
