Explore the Scenic Pocomoke River
The Pocomoke River spans over 70 miles through the Delmarva Peninsula before emptying into the Chesapeake Bay. The river banks remain undeveloped in many parts, making the river the ideal getaway from the woes of day-to-day life. There are many ways to connect with this stunning part of the Lower Shore's landscape. Of course, you could go kayaking (bring your own or rent one!) and travel along the dark waters of the Pocomoke. If you'd prefer to stay grounded though, you have options! There are plenty of land trails for walking, hiking, and biking that cut through the luscious forests.
Pocomoke Rive State Park
Pocomoke River State Park flanks both banks of the Pocomoke River and is nestled between the towns of Snow Hill and Pocomoke City. It is home to the northernmost bald cypress swamp and is the perfect retreat to get in touch with the natural landscape. Several amenities including restrooms, camp sites, pier, and a marina ensure that there is plenty to do during your stay.
Pocomoke River State Park consists of two main areas: Shad Landing and Milburn Landing. Shad Landing is the larger of the two areas and is just off of Route 113 on the south bank of the river. This site offers camping, a camp store stocked full of supplies, a marina & boat ramp for access to the river, day-use areas, canoe & kayak rentals during the summer, trails, and a nature center. Milburn Landing, located on the north bank of the river, is smaller and a little off the beaten path, but this seclusion makes the journey worth it! It's the perfect peaceful retreat and a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Similar amenities are present here such as camping, firewood sales, boat ramp & kayak launches, day-use area, trails, and a fishing pier.
Pocomoke River State Park not only offers a chance to get in touch with our environment, but also our cultural heritage. The Pocomoke Indian Nation often partners with the park to hold live demonstrations of their cultural lifeways. Historically, the area in which Pocomoke River State Park currently sits was once home to the Pocomoke People (Shad Landing) and the Nusswattux Peoples (Milburn Landing). The Pocomoke People were the paramount tribe of the Pocomoke Nation.

Pocomoke State Forest
There are plenty of activities to take part in on land too! There is a growing network of trails that run through this serene forest, offering a healthy way to unwind with a stroll, run, or bike ride. The Shad Landing area has nearly 3 miles of trails marked by color. One of these trails is the Trail of Change. Restored in the summer of 2025, it demonstrates changes in plant life, water levels, and changes caused by human activity. Check out our Story Map to see an interactive map of the trails and waterways around the park and throughout the Lower Eastern Shore!
And of course, visitors can camp at Pocomoke River State Park. Both Shad Landing and Milburn Landing offer campsites and cabins to extend your stay overnight. Shad Landing alone has 172 campsites and 8 mini cabins! However, if you're looking for a more rugged and off-grid location to camp at, Mattaponi Ponds within the Pocomoke State Forest offers just that!
